Portland Cement Concrete Pavement

Otherwise referred to as “PCC” this refers to the rigid durable concrete layer of the pavement that is in direct contact with the traffic. Once the concrete has been mixed, it is placed on a prepared base coarse and consolidated and shaped, utilizing hand-set forms and roller screeds or more typically using slip-form paving equipment. PCC pavements can be either unreinforced with doweled joints or continuously reinforced utilizing a single mat of steel reinforcing bars. PCC pavements are subject to challenging environments and loads over their lifetimes, so the concrete must be strong and durable, yet cost effective and workable.
